The fortress of Kuelap is situated at 3000 m above sea level, overlooking the Utcubamba Valley. The ancient city was built in the 9th Century on the edge of the forest in the Amazon region of Chachapoyas. Inside the large walled enclosure are more than 420 stone buildings. One can still see that the residents were housed according to their social status in these dwellings. The Kuelap archaeological site is considered the "Machu Picchu of the North". Rich grave chambers are located on the steep slopes of the mountain.
